We are now focusing on the Skills Challenge badge, so we will start with the home skills badge.  The Cubs well practice sewing, cleaning windows, ironing and vegetable peeling, I expect they will all take on these chores at home after the meeting.

Cubs Summary of the Week – 9th July 2019

Weekly Summary

Last week the Cubs learnt how to start a fire with a ferro rod and strike, I’m pleased to say that all managed to get a spark and to light the cotton wool. I expect them to be starting your camp fires on your camping holidays from now on.

We also learnt about how we can use vaseline to keep the cotton wool burning for longer and a few fire safety tips. In the future we will practise more advanced techniques of using char cloth and hay.

Next meeting

This week the Cubs will practise pitching tents and building shelters, I hope/expect the older Cubs will be able to teach the younger Cubs (and some of the leaders!) how to pitch a tent.

  • A drink and snack for after the session

Cubs Summary of the Week – 2nd July 2019

First off I must apologise, it’s been far too long since my last weekly summary. My weekends have been consumed by holidays or Scouting activities.

The recent activities include:

Kayaking

The Cubs and Scouts had a lovely time out on the lakes in Cheshunt again, some of the Cubs are becoming very strong at kayaking now. I hope to keep these sessions going once a month in the warmer months.

District Sixers and Seconders Camp

The Cubs enjoyed a fun packed weekend at Thriftwoods in one of the hottest weekends of the year, luckily Thriftwoods is very well shading by trees so no one was burnt.

The activities included:

  • fire lighting (they cannot get enough of natures TV)
  • archery
  • air rifle shooting
  • gun carriage challenge
  • 3D maze
  • assault course
  • water roller (similar to zorbing)
  • catasplat (firing paintballs at a target with catapults)
  • zipline

I’m pleased to say the Cubs won the shooting competition, even though we had the least amount of Cubs at the camp. We also had the best shot of the day, so well done everyone! I’m sure we will do even better at the next camp as we increase the number of Cubs attending.

We are still in the process of publishing the photos but a few are available here: http://52efs.scoutsites.org.uk/galleries/2019-district-sixers-and-seconders/

Weekly Summary

Last week we had a camp debrief where we discussed the popular and not-so popular activities at camp, this really helps us when creating future camps. It appears the cubs love shooting, archery and zip lines but are not so keen on the 3D maze.

Next meeting

This week the cubs will be learning about fire safety and how to light a fire using ferro rod and strike, something they all love spending hours doing at camp.

Cubs Summary of the Week – 3rd June 2019

Weekly Summary

Last week the Cubs programmed a leader to make a jam sandwich, a seemingly simple exercise that turned out to be much more complicated as the leaders were acting as robots with very limited commands! We managed to make some interesting sandwiches.

This weekend the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all continued to tidy up the space around the hut. It’s looking so much clearer now and we are looking forward to seeing the plants, seeds and bulbs grow around the hut.

Next meeting

This week the Cubs will be making gifts for fathers day.

Cub/scouts will need to bring the following:

  • Clothes to get wet in (wet suit, swimming shorts/costume etc.).  We do not recommend thick tracksuits or denim in the kayak, they get far too heavy when wet.
  • Shoes to wear in the kayak (old trainers or water shoes)
  • Towel
  • Dry clothes to go home in
  • Sun cream (there is no shade on the lake)
  • A drink and snack for after the session

We aim to be on the water for 12:00, please arrive at 11:30 to allow time to change and a safety briefing.

Cubs Summary of the Week – 21st May 2019

Weekly Summary

Last week the Cubs participated in a team challenge where teams stacked plastic cups using only an elastic bag and pieces of string. Some great teamwork and roaring cheers when challenge was accomplished. They completed the session with a game outside playing chase the pegs.

This weekend the Cubs and Scouts helped tidy up the space outside of the Scout Hut, they thoroughly enjoyed looking for bugs and did an excellent job of tidying up the weeds outside the hut.

Next meeting

This week is half term, so no meeting until the 4th June.
